Bergen is a city with a compact centre, making it easy to reach most places of interest on foot or by public transport. Bergen International Airport, Flesland (BGO), is the main airport for western Norway, located 18 km from the city centre. The airport serves regular flights from most European countries operated by KLM, SAS, Norwegian, Airfrance and Lufthansa. 

Getting to Bergen by air

Bergen Airport Flesland (BGO) serves as a vital gateway to Western Norway, connecting travelers to various domestic and international destinations. Major airlines like SAS, KLM, and Norwegian operate frequent flights from Bergen. 

SAS offers numerous routes, including connections to major hubs like Copenhagen and Oslo, facilitating onward travel. 

KLM provides direct flights to Amsterdam, a convenient hub for global connections. 

Norwegian Air Shuttle offers a wide network of direct flights to various European cities such as London Gatwick, Berlin, Rome Fiumicino, and Barcelona, in addition to extensive domestic routes across Norway. 

These airlines ensure robust connectivity for tourists arriving in or departing from Bergen, whether for city breaks or exploring the stunning Norwegian fjords.

How to get to the city center from the airport?

From/to the airport:

Light Rail (Bybanen): Line #1 connects the airport to the city center (the final stop in the very center of the city is called Byparken). The journey takes about 45 minutes and is a budget option, the fare is 49 NOK/4.22Euro.

Approximate operating hours and frequency:

  • Weekdays (Monday – Thursday): approximately 05:11 to 00:08. Frequency: every 5-10 minutes (may be more frequent during peak hours).
  • Friday and Saturday: approximately 05:11 to 03:11 (the next day). Frequency: every 5-10 minutes.
  • Sunday: approximately 05:11 to 00:11. Frequency: every 7-15 minutes.

How to buy Bybanen tickets?

The ticket is valid not only on Bybanen trams, but also on buses and some Skyss ferry connections. They can be purchased in several ways:

  1. Download the “Skyss Billett” app (available on iOS and Android) before your trip.

  1. You can link a credit card (VISA/MasterCard), use a mobile account (top up via card or bank transfer) or Vipps (a popular Norwegian payment system).
  2. The ticket is activated in the app. Usually, after purchase, there is a short 2-minute countdown before the ticket is activated, while you are allowed to board.
  • Ticket machines:
  1. Located at all Bybanen stations, including the airport.
  2. Accepts credit/debit cards.
  3. Offers single tickets and possibly 24-hour tickets. 
  4. Enter your phone number when purchasing a ticket from the machine and you will receive an SMS confirmation. Otherwise, your ticket will be linked to your bank card and in case of control you will simply provide the bank card to the controller to verify the ticket payment.

Important: Bybanen tickets CANNOT be purchased from the driver. You must always have a valid ticket before boarding.

The ticket is valid for 1 hour.

Flybussen express buses are a convenient express bus that connects Bergen Airport (BGO) with the city center. This is a faster option compared to Bybanen, but at a higher price. The journey takes about 20-30 minutes, the tram – 45 minutes. The cheapest tickets are always available if purchased in advance online on the official Flybussen website.

Single trip ticket:

  • Online: 179 NOK, when purchased on the bus it is approximately +20-30 NOK more expensive (with a card from the driver). Buy tickets

Return ticket:

  • Online approximately 298-309 NOK (cheaper than two separate tickets).

Children under 17 years old (usually up to 4 children) travel free of charge when accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket.  Flybussen starts operating at around 08:00 in the morning and ends at around 23:00 in the evening daily.

Airport drop-off point: Flybussen stops are located directly outside the airport terminal (usually platforms A3, A5, A6).

What other ways are there to get to Bergen?

  • By train: The Bergensbanen railway line from Oslo is considered one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. It’s a great way to see the Norwegian landscape. The train station is in the city centre, a 10-minute walk from Grighallen. Ticket website: vy.no
  • By ferry: Fjord Line offers ferries from Hirtshals (Denmark) and Stavanger to Bergen.
  • By foot: Bergen city centre is ideal for walking. Most of the main attractions, including Grighallen, are within walking distance of each other.
  • Taxi: The main operators are Bergen Taxi (telephone number 07000). When booking through the app, you directly get a maximum price estimate.
