CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
The CSCW 2025 Doctoral Consortium (DC) provides an opportunity for doctoral students to discuss their research in an international forum under the guidance of a panel of experienced CSCW researchers. The DC will be held on October 19th as part of the ACM 2025 Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing in Bergen, Norway. Participants will be asked to give a presentation during the DC. They will receive feedback from mentors and coaches and have dinner together the night before the DC.
The DC’s primary purpose is to create a forum for promising PhD students to present and develop their research (i.e., dissertation projects). Community building is another significant goal. To achieve these goals, we will provide a forum for PhD students from various fields (e.g., Communication Studies, Computer Science, Information Science, Science & Technology Studies) to present their research, receive feedback, and to informally engage with each other, as well as with senior CSCW scholars. We are particularly interested in applications from institutions and groups that have not traditionally been well-represented at past CSCW conferences.
This is an in-person, all-day event on October 19, with a group dinner the previous night (October 18). Conference registration fees must be paid, including a DC/workshop fee (this will also cover the dinner), and the publication will appear in the companion proceedings. DC participants are also encouraged to present their research in an interactive poster session during the main technical program of the conference.
International students are asked to account for Norwegian/Schengen visa application timelines when applying for the DC.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Applicants should be PhD students with an already established direction of research relevant to CSCW (e.g., well-developed research proposal), but whose research would benefit from guidance provided by peers and senior colleagues. Preference will be given to students who have a defined topic and program of work, i.e., who have proposed their topics and are within two years of graduation within a five-year program or are halfway through a 3-4 year program.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Applicants should submit the following items on PCS:
- A 4-page overview (including abstract and excluding references) of your doctoral research that describes, at minimum, your research question(s), work in progress, and expected contributions. Your overview will be published in the ACM Digital Library and distributed to all attendees as part of the Conference Extended Abstracts.
- A two-page curriculum vitae (CV).
- A letter of support from your advisor. This is not a letter of recommendation. It should state that you have proposed your dissertation/thesis topic and/or are within two years of graduation within a five-year program or are halfway through a 3-4 year program. The letter should also briefly describe what the student will contribute to the cohort of students and how the student would benefit from participating in the DC.
All submissions, including letters of support, must be received by the chairs via PCS by AOE on May 16th, 2025. Submissions received after this date will not be considered.
SUBMISSION FORMATTING
To submit, please use the Precision Conference System (PCS) 2.0: https://new.precisionconference.com (Please ensure you are in the CSCW DC track when submitting.) The conference is using the ACM Publication System (TAPS) process; all DC submissions should follow the instructions and use the Word/LaTeX Master Article templates (single-column format) located here.
We require that submissions are accessible. Please review the ACM’s references for organizing accessible conferences (e.g., SIGACCESS’s Accessible Conference Guide). For questions regarding accessibility please contact accessibility Co-Chairs at accessibility2025@cscw.acm.org.
Important Note on Funding to Accepted DC Participants
We are currently seeking funding to support Doctoral Consortium participants; however, this funding is not guaranteed, so we encourage students to seek funding to support their participation. We will post updates to this page if any funding will be available to students.
All questions should be directed to dc2025@cscw.acm.org.
