CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

The CSCW 2024 Doctoral Consortium (DC) provides an opportunity for doctoral students to discuss their research in an international forum under the guidance of a panel of experienced CSCW researchers. The DC will be held on November 9 and 10 as part of the ACM 2024 Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing in San José, Costa Rica. Participants will be asked to give a presentation during the DC. They will receive feedback from mentors and coaches.

The DC’s primary purpose is to create a forum for promising PhD students to present and develop their research (i.e., dissertation projects). Community building is another significant goal. To achieve these goals, we will provide a forum for PhD students from various fields (e.g., Communication Studies, Computer Science, Information Science, and Science and Technology Studies) to present their research, receive feedback, and to informally engage with each other, as well as senior CSCW scholars. We are particularly interested in applications from institutions and groups that have not traditionally been well-represented at past CSCW conferences.

This is an in-person all-day event on November 10th and a dinner on the previous night, November 9th. Registration fees must be paid, and the publication will appear in the companion proceedings. DC participants will also present their research in an interactive poster session during the main technical program of the conference.

International students are asked to account for Costa Rica visa application timelines when applying for the DC.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE

Applicants should be Ph.D. students with an already established direction of research relevant to CSCW, but whose research would benefit from guidance provided by peers and senior colleagues. Preference will be given to students who have a defined topic and program of work, i.e., who have proposed their topics and are within 2 years of graduation within a 5-year program or are half way through a 3 (or 4) year program.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Applicants should submit the following items on PCS:

  • A 4-page overview (including abstract) of your doctoral research that describes, at minimum, your research question(s), work in progress, and expected contributions. Your overview will be published in the ACM Digital Library and distributed to all attendees as part of the Conference Extended Abstracts.
    • See formatting details below.
  • A two-page curriculum vita (CV).
  • A letter of support from their advisor. It should state the student has proposed their topics and or are within 2 years of graduation within a 5-year program or are halfway through a 3 (or 4) year program. Also, what the student will contribute to the cohort of students.

All submissions must be received by the chairs by AOE on May 23, 2024. Submissions received after this date will not be considered. Submissions will be acknowledged by email once they have been checked for completeness.

SUBMISSION FORMATTING

Word authors: Because CSCW papers are published in PACM HCI that uses the Sheridan service, authors need to use the old interim ACM Small template, which is no longer published on ACM websites. Please use the following link to access the templates: https://dl.acm.org/journal/pacmhci/submission-templates

LaTeX authors need to use the template which is available at https://www.acm.org/publications/authors/submissions, and insert the acmsmall call.

Overleaf authors need to use the template at https://www.overleaf.com/latex/templates/acm-journals-new-master-template/vgtfrcvmrvxf and use the acmsmall call.

Important Note on Funding to Accepted DC Participants

The conference has been awarded NSF financial support to support doctoral Consortium participants in US-based institutions.

We strongly encourage students outside of the US to seek funding.

All questions should be directed to dc2024@cscw.acm.org.
