Monday Lunch Events

We invite you to sign up for a social lunch or a workshop (includes lunch) about "Mentoring Undergraduate Research" on the Monday of CSCW. Signing up for these events is completely optional and you are, of course, welcome to make your own plans as well.

Social lunch (Monday, 12:00PM-1:30PM)

Designed for newcomers and regular attendees alike, these lunches are a great way to meet new people and take some of the hassle out of finding a lunch date on the first day. To help you get started, each lunch will be hosted by a member of the CSCW community who has chosen a starting point for conversation. While you will be required to pay for your own meal, we will make reservations for each lunch group at a nearby restaurant. Each group is limited to 6 people total.

We invite you to sign up for a lunch by visiting (by March 10): http://tinyurl.com/cscwlunch. For questions please contact SV co-chairs at .

Workshop on "Mentoring Undergraduate Research" (Monday, 10:30AM - 1:00PM)

This workshop is free and includes lunch. The workshop is sponsored by the Computing Research Association's Education Committee with generous funding from the National Science Foundation. The workshop will be run by Professors P. Takis Metaxas (Wellesley College, USA) and Ran Libeskind-Hadas (Harvey Mudd College, USA), both of whom have substantial experience with organizing, funding, and mentoring undergraduate research programs. Topics of the workshop include:

  • Best practices for working with undergraduate research students including selecting appropriate research problems, providing the right level of guidance, and setting ambitious but realistic expectations
  • Funding opportunities for supporting undergraduate research
  • Real success (and failure) stories and lessons learned
  • Helping students prepare for graduate school
